運動会や文化祭のこの時期、お天気がとても気になりますね。
A: Kim and Mike are really looking forward to the sports meet.
B: So am I. But it depends on the weather.
A: Right! I hope we get good weather on that day.
なんて会話があちこちのご家庭できかれそうです。
"It depends on the weather." は「運動会の開催はお天気次第」という意味です。
本来 "depend on..." は「...をあてにする、頼りにする」という意味ですが、こんな風に「...次第だ」という意味でも使われます。
"depend" は "It depends." と短く使われることもよくあります。
「時と場合による」「一言ではいえないな」というニュアンスで、とても便利な表現です。
Josh: Hey, Mariko. How much does a cup of coffee cost in Tokyo？
Mariko: It depends. It is just one dollar in a convenience store. But it can be six dollars in a nice coffee shop.
一言で「こうだ！」と言えないとき、「場所による、条件による、天気による...」確かにありますね。
そんな時はぜひこの "It depends." を使ってください。ちょっと説明を加えるとより親切です。
