今日はのタイトルは "Why not?" です。「それくらいは知っているよ！」という方も多いかと思います。
でも、使いかたは一つではなんですよ。まずは一つ目の使い方から。
Bill: Jim is planning a welcome party for me.
Maria: That sounds great! When is it?
Bill: It's on Saturday. But I don't want to go.
Maria: Why not? It's a party for you. You've got to go!
自分の歓迎会なのに行きたくないと言っている Bill に Maria は "Why not?" と理由を聞いています。
こんな風に「…したくない」「…は好きじゃない」と否定形のコメントに対して理由を聞くときは "Why not?" と言います。
では、これはどうでしょう？
Tom: I need a new lamp. My bedroom is too dark.
Yoko: I'm going to Nitori this afternoon. I can pick it up for you.
Tom: Are you sure？
Yoko: Why not？
この "Why not?" は「もちろん！」という意味ですね。
二つ目の "Why not?" は誘われたとき、「いいよ」「もちろん」という意味でも使うことが出来ます。
