皆さんは "shame" という単語を聞かれたことはありますか？
「えーと、確か”恥”って意味じゃなかったっけ？」という声が聞こえてきそうですね。
確かにそういう意味もあります。アクション映画などでヒーローが敵に "Shame on you!" なんて叫んでいるときがあります。この場合は「恥を知れ！」ですよね。
でも、この "What a shame!" は「残念です！」という意味で日常に頻繁に使われます。
A: My sister's birthday is coming soon. So I went shopping last weekend.
B: Oh, yes? Did you find something nice?
A: I really like Lucy's and I went there. Guess what. They've closed the store!
B: What a shame!
お気に入りのお店（Lucy's）でお姉さんのお誕生日プレゼントを買おうとおもったら、お店が閉店していた！
「なんと残念な！」ですよね。（本当にあった話です）
こんな "What a shame!" もあります。
A: Hey, listen. I met a wonderful man at a party the other day.
B: Wow! What's he like? Did he ask you out for dinner or something?
A: Actually, I soon found out he was engaged.
B: What a shame!
素敵な男性と出会ったとおもったら、彼はもう婚約していたのです。「残念！」ですね.
