梅雨ですね。皆さんお元気ですか？
今日のフレーズは "take a chance" です。ご存じでしょうか？
大部分の方が「うーん。チャンスを取る、つまりやってみる、っていう意味ね」と思われるでしょうね。
実はとても間違いやすい表現なんです。
ずばり意味は「一か八かやってみる」「勝負に出る」というちょっと切羽詰まった意味なんです。
Sally: Did you hear the news, Tom?
Tom: Yes. A developer is planning to construct a five-story building next to our house, on the south side.
Sally: That's impossible! Our house would be totally in the shade.
Tom: They say the construction plan is legal.
Sally: Is it really legal? Is there anything we can do to stop it?
Tom: First, I'll talk to our neighbors. And then I'll call our lawyer. We'll fight against the developer.
Sally: Absolutely! Let's take a chance!
Sally と Tom の大切な家は隣に5階建てのビルが建つ計画で日陰になる可能性が。
問題はそのビルの建築プランが合法だという事。難しい戦いになりそうですね。
でも簡単に白旗を上げるわけにはいきません。
"Let's take a chance." 勝ち目があるかどうかわからないけれど「一か八かやってみよう！」とSally。
ちょっと例が分かりにくかったかもしれませんが、仕事やプライバートで何か問題につき当たったとき、
「これでいってみよう！」という案があれば "Let's take a chance!" ですね！
皆さんもどこかで使うことがあると思います。
